Ayurveda (Pronounced Aa-yer-vay-da), is said to be world oldest medicine, most holistic or comprehensive medical system. Ayurveda is derived from the Ayu+Veda
Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge or science
The Word veda refers to knowledge. Ayurveda word is derived from veda. By definition, “it is knowledge of life” or the knowledge which is concerning to prolong the human life. A number of guiding principle for preservation of health are mentioned in Vedas. However in Atharva Veda, such guiding principles, medicinal effects of herbs etc. occur more abundantly. Thus, Atharva Veda forms the structural foundation for emergence of Ayurveda as a separate branch of Science of knowledge.
The tradition of Ayurveda was started from Brahma. According to Some literatures and Puranas; Brahma, the creature of the universe imparted the knowledge to Daksha Prajapati. The knowledge of Ayurveda was then propagated to Ashwini Kumars and later to Lord Indra. Dhanwantari was sent by lord Indra to Earth to propagate the knowledge of Ayurveda. The first historical documents concerning Ayurveda are found in Rigveda and Atharva Veda. Among many distinguished scholars in Ayurveda Charaka, Sushruta and Baghvata were prominent. They gradually developed into “ Science of Life”
